What is Guildford Chess Academy Club ?
Guildford Chess Academy Club combines features of a top chess school with an premium chess club for all! At the same time, unlike traditional chess clubs we provide structured chess learning focusing on personal needs of each member and player. Even where traditional chess clubs have junior sections and advertise some coaching those sections are run by average club players without recognised chess titles or trainer's qualifications. Adult coaching or taking parents on board as learners are very casual and in most cases simply non-existent as far as those local chess clubs are concerned.
What is wrong with a traditional chess clubs?
Traditional chess clubs in this country mainly represent places where older men could go to play chess and socialise a bit. They can also be suited to those who want to play matches or occasional informal games over the board trying to apply a couple of things they learnt from their chess books or online materials. Those players are very unlikely to get serious and steady progress. They are usually destined to stay on virtually the same level for all their life or playing career.
We are very different because we are based on different principles. In course of setting up we consulted many prominent figures in British chess including those who have had some rather controversial and unpopular views about chess in this country. As was noted to us by a well-known UK chess tutor and author Richard James "we really need to move away from the concept of the chess club meeting in the evening in a draughty church hall or grotty pub. They are really not suitable for children and many adults alike" (particularly for those keen on making a good progress). They are also too late for both younger children and older children (who have too much homework in the evenings). Furthermore, in many cases those weekday evenings are not suitable to adult club players either. Many of them would prefer to do chess with fresh heads on a Saturday morning rather than after they finish their working day.
Unlike traditional chess clubs we provide structured chess learning focusing on personal needs of each member and player. Even where traditional chess clubs have junior section and advertise some coaching those sections are run by average club players without recognised trainers qualifications and sufficient teaching experience. Adult coaching or taking parents on board as learners are very casual and in most cases simply non-existent as far as those local chess clubs are concerned.

We use personal study plans, personal game analysis as an extra support and closely monitor and facilitate the progress of each player and member. In addition we provide lots of fun, friend-making and socialising as a normal chess club play at the end of our classes. Here we are different again as apart from our formal tournaments all informal games are supervised by chess masters who will provide relevant comments and learning insight along the way.
You will challenge yourself and your brain, get specific skill that may be useful in normal day-to-day life and what is more you will be able to help your children learn, boost their potential and provide a good partner and teacher for home play and home learning.
Equally, we cater for adult players of all levels from beginners to FIDE Masters who really want to improve, get on to a new level faster and easily. There are lots of books, DVDs, online videos and other materials nowadays. However, it is a proven fact that those thousands of books, videos and other sources will not promote you as fast and as high as the same sort of independent learning + real face to face lessons, questions and answers, constant feedback and advice and actual play and real time explanations given not by an average club players or average tutors but the top UK Masters and trainers.
Is it truly the best place for chess in Guildford and Surrey ?
Yes, you can have it all here and now. You do not need to go to a traditional one-sided clubs or go to London, or look for a private chess tutor. You can join Guildford Chess Academy Club, see for yourself and compare if you had some chess experiences in the past.
The bottom line is that you will be able to get much greater improvement in terms of chess knowledge, skills and your formal grading than doing chess elsewhere or by relying solely on learning at home or school and playing online.
